Rarely do we hear from workers, farmers and community residents in their own voices, and much less when what they have to say runs against the “party line” that NAFTA and the corporate globalization it represents “brings benefits to all.” In fact, NAFTA and “free trade” have been a catastrophe for working people and the environment in Mexico. “NAFTA From Below” puts names on the victims and faces on those names, so the many ways that NAFTA has undermined workers’ rights, workers’ health and poison the communities they live in are explained in real life terms. Our Network was proud to work closely with Mexican workers who filed complaints under the NAFTA “labor side agreement” to protest the Mexican government’s failure to enforce its own laws and the U.S. transnational corporations’ exploitation of workers’ poverty. This book shows how these workers led the way in fighting to defend themselves, and the rights of all workers in the age of globalization, and for a just, sustainable development that will truly “benefit all.”
